She has two grandfathers that are musical, one grandma who is a trained singer, and Addison and I both really like music.
I also know how to play the drums, so like, I have a vested interest in making sure Arlandria is raised to enjoy one of the oldest artforms on the planet.
So I figured today I'd let you guys know some music I was listening to with Arlie.
For the most part these bands align with my tastes. I don't know exactly what her Mom listens too. But I have a habit of running these in the background or singing them to Arlie so that she can enjoy it and maybe one day have a realization that music has always been there.
So here's 3 Bands we've been listening too since she was born.

1. Foo Fighters
This should really come as no surprise. For those who don't know, Arlandria is the name of a Foo Fighters song. It's my second favorite band, and my Father's favorite band. That might make it seem like the name came from us, but actually Addison is the one who chose that name and that song. I just agreed to it.
Besides that these guys are helmed by Dave Grohl, a legitimately legendary Drummer, who actually takes the Rhythm Guitar and Song Writing duties for this band. Almost everyone has heard of these guys so I don't have to go too far into it, but the songs primarily focus on Love, Existence, Dreams, and (in my humble opinion) Loving Music.
So hopefully this helps Arlie get into the same grungy rock that I like to listen to often. Also, if you were hoping for bands that weren't "Alternative" on this list, you might be a little disappointed.

2. Flyleaf
This might come as some surprise to people who know me. I am actually a big big fan of certain Mainstream Christian Rock (think the ones who have a dusting of Religious content as opposed to a Gospel level devotional aspect to the music (to expand think Creed, Manchester Orchestra, etc.)
Anywho, I like playing Female fronted bands for Arlandria because I am one of those hippy dippy liberals that cares about representation and such in their art. So I want Arlie to grow up seeing herself, hearing herself, and people that look and sound like her in books, movies, games, and music since that's what this list is concerning.
Flyleaf runs the gamut from deeply struggling with self-esteem, to breaking free from abuse, to surviving the world, and some of my favorites - inspirational. Songs like "Arise" and "Stand" are among the music that echoes in my head when I need a good pick me up or some inspiration for writing or just living. They should be universal anthems.

3. Paramore
So I may admit to liking more of a certain time period of this band as opposed to necessarily everything they've done under the sun (which is more how I feel about the first two bands on this list) but there's something incredibly unique about the song writing that Paramore has.
First off, not only do I think the guitar and drums are often top notch in their music, but the song writing has a vareity to it. As Hayley Williams has aged, she's had the affect of making more and more mature music based on life experiences and what not. From Riot's completely teenage punk anthems, to Brand New Eyes' early 20s angst, I feel like the song writing is of the type that grows up with someone. It certainly grew up with me at the time.
To compare Paramore's music to my experience with Harry Potter (and how the books got darker and darker as the series went along and the characters grew up) isn't entirely out of place here. Of all the bands I could see her connecting with or liking this the best as she grows up.

Needless to say there are hundreds of bands and thousands of songs that I'm going to listen to with Arlie. And it's not all going to be Alternative Rock. There are Soundtracks, Instrumental, Rap, Country, Pop songs that I want Arlie to enjoy as she grows up.
And then comes the enticing choice of which Instrument she should learn to play: Voice? Guitar? Bass? Drums? XYLOPHONE?????
Anyway, I'll probably dip in to update from now and then especially once she's old enough to have favorites.
Sincerely,
Jeff
